Legal Risk & Compliance Careers
The career map for legal risk & compliance in law firms — what each role involves, what it pays, and where it leads. Built by the specialist recruiters who place these roles every day.
One of the fastest-growing careers in law — without needing to practise
Legal risk and compliance careers have grown rapidly as UK law firms respond to SRA regulation, anti-money-laundering obligations and client due-diligence demands. Every regulated firm now runs a risk function — conflicts, AML, business acceptance and firm-wide compliance — and experienced people are consistently in demand.
It is also one of the few legal careers open to non-lawyers: analysts join from paralegal roles, law degrees, banking compliance and legal operations, then progress through team leadership into management — or, for qualified solicitors, into Risk Lawyer and Head of Risk positions. The six pathways below map the whole ladder: what each role does, the skills firms ask for, and realistic UK salary benchmarks at every step.

Careers in legal risk & compliance — common questions
Straight answers from the consultants who place these roles.
How do I start a career in legal risk and compliance?
Most people arrive from one of three routes: law graduates and paralegals who move into conflicts or business acceptance analysis, professionals from banking or financial-services compliance who cross into law firms, and internal moves from legal operations or secretarial teams. Entry-level analyst roles (AML, conflicts, business acceptance) typically ask for strong attention to detail and an understanding of the regulatory environment rather than a practising certificate — a law degree helps but is not always required.
What does legal risk and compliance pay in the UK?
Analyst-level roles in UK law firms typically start around £33,000, rising to £60,000–£70,000 with experience. Managers overseeing business acceptance or firm-wide compliance earn roughly £55,000–£105,000, and qualified Risk Lawyers £55,000–£100,000+. London and US-firm roles sit at the top of these bands. Our salary calculator and annual salary guide give role-by-role benchmarks.
Where can a legal risk and compliance career lead?
The function has a clear ladder: analyst roles lead to senior analyst and team leader positions, then into management. Beyond that sit firm-wide leadership roles — Head of Risk, Director of Risk & Compliance, COLP and MLRO appointments — and, for qualified solicitors, the Risk Lawyer and General Counsel route. Because every regulated firm needs this function, experience transfers well between firms and jurisdictions.
